Petroleum is known by many different names. It is called as black gold (due to its black colour as it is extracted from earth) or liquid gold as it regulates economy of a countries or Fossil fuel ( as it formed from dead organic materials over the hundreds of decades).
How petroleum is made or formed ?
Petroleum also know as Fossil fuels are biological materials which can be burnt as a source of energy. Petroleum can’t be made or prepared by humans till now as Fossil fuels are formed over the hundreds years when large quantities of dead organisms and algae are buried underneath sedimentary rock and subjected to both intense heat and pressure. Over the period of time, these dead organisms ( mostly aquatic) and plants remains buried under sand, silt, and rock. Pressure and heat changed some of this carbon and hydrogen-rich material into coal, some into oil (petroleum), and some into natural gas.
As we know that formation of petroleum require hundreds of year time to form, it also states that we have a limited amount of Fossil fuels stored beneath the earth surface. Now questions is how much Fossil or crude oil we have and when it will end.
When petroleum will end or depleted ?
As we know petroleum has a limit then sooner or later it will end. We have finite supply of crude oil. Now the question is when ?
The Organization for Petroleum Exporting Countries reports that there are 1.65 trillion barrels of crude oil reserves left in the world as of 2016. The world consumes 35,442,913,090 barrels of oil as of the year 2016, equivalent to 97,103,871 barrels per day
The total reserve of crude oil will end up in next 47 years.
When petroleum was first discovered ?
Petroleum were being used since many hundreds of decades earlier. But today’s world’s oil history begins in a woodland valley along a creek in remote northwestern Pennsylvania. Today’s U.S. petroleum exploration and production industry was born on August 27, 1859, near Titusville when a well specifically drilled for oil finds it.
Why petroleum is dangerous to Environment ?
Today’s most of modern industrial transportation is solely depends on petroleum. All kind of transport require petroleum products like, ships, aeroplane, spacecraft, car bus, truck etc. We are too much dependent on petroleum products. But despite the usefulness of petroleum there are some serious bad effects of petroleum on our environment.
1. Carbon emission: 90% of total carbon emission comes from petroleum only. With increasing population and our dependency over petroleum just making it worse for us and mother nature.
2. Air pollution : The burning of petroleum releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which pollutes the air we breathe. Air pollution in cities has been linked to an increase in respiratory diseases, like asthma, particularly in young children and the elderly, along with shortened life expectancy.
3. Oil spills: Large oil spills sometimes occur during drilling, transport, and use, which of course affect the surrounding environment. These spills damage local environmental conditions bor alter them.
Now question is Why Petroleum is no longer black gold ?
As we know now that we have a finite supply of petroleum and in approximately 47 year it’s gonna end. But as of now excessive use of petroleum by developing countries have have created a greater Danger to our ecosystem. Earth’s temperature it rising and climate change have been recorded arround the globe
Governments and private firms are now trying to find new possibilities in renewable energy like solar energy and atomic energies.
Thats why the petroleum is no longer black gold or liquid gold. Most of modern days companies are launching electric vehicles and researching on better battery systems to provide enough power to drive vehicles like cars, trucks buses, train and even planes. A better battery systems can provide enough power to run transport and big machines in industries and also use of solar energy to run them.
About 100 year ago Tesla given the vision of renewable energy but petroleum industry subside the view to nourish their more profitable business of petroleum. But now due to sever climate change problem government arround the world forcing these companies to produce green energy vehicles. Many companies has shown good results in automotive industries to replace petroleum from auto industry to renewable energies.
And if happen, definitely it’s gonna happen, then who and why we will need petroleum which is going to last otherwise in 47 years. Thats the reason behind petroleum loosing it’s charm and renewable energy is taking place of petroleum.
